Formation of Metallic Nanoparticles in Organic Catalytic Processes

In this year my research group continued to investigate new sustainable methods for organic syntheses. Our objective was to reduce the large volumes of harmful organic solvents used by the industry and replace them by water. This year we studied the regioselective hydroformylation of alkenes and alkynes in the presence and in the absence of ionic liquids [Regioselective hydroformylation of vinylarenes in aqueous media by a sol-gel entrapped rhodium catalyst. A: Chem. 2012, 358, 129-133]; Selective transfer hydrogenation of lipophilic subtrates (alkenes, alkynes, ???-unsaturated ketones, benzyl halides and nitro-compounds) by cyclohexene [catalytic transfer hydrogenation of hydrophobic substrates by water-insoluble donors in aqueous microemulsion. C. Batarseh, et. al. J. Mol. Catal. A: Chem. accepted for publication, in press]. We started to investigate the decarbonylaiton of aldehydes, the addition of chalcophils to diacetylenes and hydration of alkynes in aqueous microemulsions (see e.g., ,the oral presentation on metal-free hydration of alkynes. Z. Nairoukh, J. Blum. 10th Int. Congress of Young Chemists, 10-14th Oct., Gedansk, Poland, 2012). In addition, we investigated the acceptorless dehydrogenation of primary and secondary carbinols to give esters, lactones, aldehydes and ketones [Dehydrogenation of alcohols under ambient atmosphere by recyclable sol-gel encaged iridium-pincer catalyst. K. Oded, et. al. Catalysis Commun. 2012, 20 68-70]. We used the services of the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology for the detection and characterization of the nanoparticles that may have been formed during our catalytic processes. Detailed investigations of the TEM and XPS results have been recorded and analyzed. We found that while palladium acetate is converted during the transfer hydrogenation in aqueous microemulsion into Pd(0) nanoparticles, the rhodium catalysts that promote selective hydroformylation are not reduced to Rh(0).
